Built between the late 13th and early 14th centuries, this palace-style residence is one of the best-preserved examples of Nasrid architecture outside of Granada.

History and Origins

La Casa del Gigante was built during the reign of the Marinid Sultan Abomelik and was one of the most important residences of the wealthy Muslim elite in Ronda. Although the current structure of the house has been modified, it still preserves its original layout, designed in the traditional Muslim style centered around a central courtyard.

Architectural Features

La Casa del Gigante is a perfect example of Nasrid architecture, with rooms distributed around a central courtyard that includes a water basin. Notable features include its entrance decorated with ataurique (intricate stucco work) and cursive inscriptions, the remains of 14th-century polychrome decorations, and the exquisite plasterwork that resembles that of the Alhambra in Granada.

The house’s name comes from two large anthropomorphic stone reliefs, possibly of Phoenician or Punic origin, that once adorned its corners. Today, only one of these reliefs remains, though its shape is barely distinguishable. This relief has been identified as a Hittite god from the Phoenician period.

Visitor Information

Location: Calle José Mª Holgado, in the La Ciudad district.

Opening Hours: Monday to Friday from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM (autumn-winter) and from 10:00 AM to 7:00 PM (spring-summer).

Admission: €2 per person.

Accessibility: Some areas may present difficulties for visitors with reduced mobility.

Visit and Complementary Experience

La Casa del Gigante is the perfect place to immerse yourself in the history and culture of Muslim Spain. Visiting it offers a unique experience, allowing you to discover how noble families lived in Andalusian Ronda.
