Cuenca Gardens in Ronda: nature, views and serenity over the Tajo
Cuenca Gardens are one of the most special and peaceful spots in Ronda, a green space perched on the Tajo cliff edge offering some of the best views of the city and its natural surroundings.
Located between the Old Bridge and the New Bridge, these terraced gardens provide an unforgettable walk among flowers, trees, and viewpoints hanging over the Guadalevín River.
Origin and meaning
The name Cuenca Gardens comes from the twinned relationship between Ronda and the city of Cuenca, established in 1975, as both share the dramatic beauty of their urban landscapes overlooking the void.
As a tribute to this bond, the gardens were designed in the late 1960s and renovated in 2007 to strengthen ties and add special lighting.
Design and route
The main feature of Cuenca Gardens is their stepped terrace layout descending the Tajo cliffside, offering a unique perspective of the canyon, the New Bridge, the Old Bridge, and much of Ronda’s old town.
The path connects two of the city’s most iconic areas with access from “Los Ocho Caños” and the Felipe V Arch, and is protected by stone walls and railings for visitor safety.
Walking along the terraces invites you to pause at different viewpoints, perfect for photography and quiet contemplation.
From here you can admire:
- the Sierra de las Nieves Natural Park, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve
- the Peñón de los Enamorados
- the Palacio del Rey Moro
- the impressive Tajo gorge drop
- the meandering Guadalevín River
Flora and atmosphere
The gardens feature a carefully selected mix of native and ornamental species that fill the space with colour and life.
Highlights include prickly pears, cypresses, oleanders, Virginia creepers, plane trees, and olive trees among others.
This lush vegetation creates a fresh and pleasant environment all year round, perfect for walking, relaxing, reading, or simply enjoying peace away from the city bustle.
A place for everyone
Cuenca Gardens are accessible to all visitors, including children and people with reduced mobility, thanks to well-maintained paths and rest areas.
It’s an ideal spot for families, couples, and nature lovers. At sunset, the park is bathed in a golden light that enhances its magical landscape.
