The Bandolero Museum, formerly located in the historic heart of Ronda, is a unique institution that offers visitors a fascinating immersion into the world of Andalusian banditry. Founded on May 7, 1995, by Jesús Almazán González, this museum has become a cultural landmark in the region.
⚠️ Important Notice: The Bandolero Museum is no longer in Ronda. The collection has now been relocated to El Borge, a town approximately a two-hour drive from Ronda. The information below reflects the history and content of the original museum.
History & Location
The museum was originally housed in a traditional Ronda-style home over 100 years old, creating the perfect atmosphere to transport visitors back to the era of the bandoleros. However, in September 2020, the entire collection was acquired by the El Borge Town Hall and relocated to this municipality under the name “Galería del Bandolero.”
Collection & Exhibits
The Bandolero Museum holds an impressive collection of over 1,390 objects, including books, weapons, documents, clothing, engravings, lithographs, official seals, period newspapers, and much more. The exhibition is divided into five themed rooms:
- Romantic travelers & documentation
- Experiencing banditry
- Famous bandoleros
- Those who followed their trail – The Civil Guard
- Weapons & written testimonies
Among the most notable items are baptism and death certificates, wanted posters, and life-size representations of bandolero life with mannequins dressed in period clothing.
Cultural Significance
The Bandolero Museum is not intended as a tribute to these historical figures but rather as an effort to recover and preserve an important part of Andalusian history. It is considered the most comprehensive information center on banditry in Spain, attracting researchers and history enthusiasts alike.
Although the museum is no longer in Ronda, its legacy lives on in El Borge. Visitors can expect an immersive experience that transports them to the golden age of banditry, offering a unique perspective on this social and cultural phenomenon that has greatly influenced the romantic image of Andalusia.
