Natural Pools and Rivers Near Ronda: Where to Swim in the Heart of Nature
If you’re looking for a refreshing getaway in the Serranía, far from the crowds and surrounded by mountains, Ronda and its surroundings offer natural spots where you can swim in crystal-clear waters and enjoy summer in a different way. Between rivers, waterfalls and natural pools, you’ll discover authentic mountain retreats perfect for a day of total disconnection in nature.
1. Cueva del Gato (Benaoján)
One of the most iconic and spectacular places in the Serranía de Ronda. Located just 15 km from Ronda, Cueva del Gato is the outlet of the Hundidero–Gato underground system, a network of caves and subterranean rivers that emerge into a striking turquoise natural pool.
Swimming is allowed in the outdoor area (not inside the cave), and the water remains incredibly clear — and cold — even in summer. This is a protected natural area, so the use of soap and leaving waste is strongly discouraged. There is parking, a picnic area and a small seasonal beach bar.How to get there: via the MA-7401 road from Ronda towards Benaoján. Arrive early, especially in July and August.
2. Charco de la Virgen (Júzcar)
In the so-called “Smurf village” of Júzcar lies one of the most beautiful natural pools in Málaga province. The Genal River forms a calm pool surrounded by lush vegetation, ideal for sunbathing or enjoying a picnic. Poplars, ferns and the gentle sound of water create an atmosphere of absolute serenity.
It’s a perfect spot for families and anyone seeking a peaceful swim in the heart of the mountains, just 25 minutes from Ronda.Tip: wear suitable footwear for walking over stones and try to arrive early, as access is via a small trail that becomes very popular in summer.
3. Guadiaro River and Charco Redondo (Jimera de Líbar)
The Guadiaro River is one of the most important rivers in the area, flowing through spectacular landscapes of canyons, riverside forests and farmland. One of its most popular swimming spots is Charco Redondo, near the village of Jimera de Líbar and next to the Algeciras–Ronda railway line.
The waters here are clean and calm, perfect for swimming, cooling off or simply relaxing in the shade of the poplar trees. The surrounding area offers picnic spots and walking trails, allowing you to combine a swim with a scenic hike. How to get there: via the A-373 road or by train from Ronda (Jimera station is right by the river, just five minutes from the pool).
4. Natural pools of Benalauría and the Genal Valley
The Genal Valley, south of Ronda, hides some of the greenest and most impressive landscapes in the province. In the villages of Benalauría and Benarrabá you’ll find small natural pools and calm river sections formed by the Genal River, perfect for a refreshing dip surrounded by chestnut trees and pines.
These spots are quieter, more rugged and ideal for travellers seeking absolute peace. Many of them can also be combined with circular hiking routes connecting the white villages of the valley.
5. Charco del Moro (Montecorto – Zahara de la Sierra)
Near the border between Málaga and Cádiz provinces, Charco del Moro is a spectacular natural enclave featuring a waterfall and a natural pool fed by a mountain stream. The water is cold and crystal clear, and the mountainous surroundings invite pure relaxation.
It’s about a 30–35 minute drive from Ronda. The route is easy and very scenic, making it an ideal option for a different kind of summer day out.
Tips for enjoying these spots responsibly
- Avoid leaving waste or using creams that may pollute the water.
- Wear non-slip footwear and bring enough drinking water.
- If visiting on weekends, arrive early to find parking.
- Camping and open fires are not allowed in most of these areas, especially in summer.
