Genalguacil: The Open-Air Museum Village You Must Visit from Ronda

Street art and whitewashed houses in Genalguacil, the open-air museum village near Ronda

Just 45 km from Ronda, in the heart of the Genal Valley, lies Genalguacil, one of Andalusia’s most unique open-air museum villages. More than just a picturesque white village, it is a place where artists from around the world gather every two years to create artworks that remain permanently displayed throughout its streets, transforming the entire village into a living open-air museum.

An open-air museum in the Serranía

The cultural project “Genalguacil Museum Village” began in 1994, when the local council organised the first Genal Valley Art Encounters. Although the first editions in 1994, 1995 and 1996 were held annually, the event has since taken place every two years during the first half of August. During these weeks, sculptors, painters, ceramic artists and other creatives live alongside local residents while producing works of art that are, in most cases, permanently installed in the village’s squares, streets and façades. Today, more than 140 artists from around the world have left their mark on Genalguacil.

The result is a village where every walk becomes a journey through an art gallery. Sculptures, murals, carved tree trunks and ceramic installations blend seamlessly into the urban landscape, while even house numbers and benches become part of the artistic experience.

What to see in Genalguacil

The Contemporary Art Museum

The village has its own museum, the Fernando Centeno López Contemporary Art Museum (known as the MAC), inaugurated in 2004. With more than 1,000 square metres spread across two floors, it features temporary exhibitions as well as the permanent collection from the Museum Village project. It is also the best place to pick up a map showing the location of the artworks scattered throughout the village.

Art in the streets

Beyond the museum, the real attraction is wandering through the village itself. Around 200 works of art are displayed throughout the streets, and the best way to discover them is simply to stroll without following a fixed route.

Heritage and viewpoints

In Plaza de la Constitución you’ll find the Church of San Pedro de Verona, while several viewpoints around the village offer panoramic views across the Genal Valley, surrounded by Spanish firs, cork oaks and chestnut forests.

Nature and hiking

The surrounding countryside offers several hiking routes, including the well-known Genal River Boardwalk Trail, ideal for combining your cultural visit with a scenic walk through nature.

Local gastronomy

Genalguacil’s cuisine reflects the traditions of the Serranía, with cold soups and gazpachos during spring and summer, and hearty dishes such as migas, chickpea stews and gachas in winter, alongside homemade cured meats and game dishes including rabbit stew.

How to get to Genalguacil from Ronda

From Ronda, the most direct route is to take the A-369 towards Marbella / San Pedro de Alcántara before turning onto the MA-8305. The journey takes around 45 minutes by car. Public transport is also available, although it’s advisable to check bus timetables in advance if you’re not travelling by car.

Tips for visiting Genalguacil

Wear comfortable shoes: the streets are narrow, steep and cobbled.

Park at the museum car park: it’s spacious, free of charge and saves you from driving through the historic centre.

Choose your dates carefully: if you visit during the Art Encounters (first half of August in even-numbered years), you’ll experience the village at its most creative. Otherwise, any time of year is perfect for exploring at a relaxed pace.

Combine it with other experiences: Genalguacil fits perfectly into a wider itinerary through the Serranía de Ronda.

Pair your visit with a wine experience

If you’re travelling from Ronda, why not combine art with wine? The Serranía is also home to outstanding wines, and a stop at Doña Felisa Winery is the perfect complement to your day. Enjoy a guided winery tour, a paired wine tasting and a stroll through vineyards and natural parks before or after exploring Genalguacil’s museum streets. Two very different experiences—art and wine—that together create the perfect day out in the Serranía de Ronda.
