Ronda is known for its picturesque landscapes, and tourists from all over the world visit to see the Puente Nuevo. As a novelty, in 2024, the new Camino del Desfiladero del Tajo was inaugurated. This gorge, known for its dizzying rocky walls and scenic beauty, along with a hanging trail halfway up the western wall of the Hoya del Tajo, offers an unforgettable view that combines nature, adventure, and rich cultural heritage. In this article, we will take you to discover all the details of this fascinating place.

The Tajo Gorge: A Geological Wonder

The Tajo Gorge is an impressive natural formation that the Guadalevín River (which means “river of milk” in Arabic) has carved through the action of water and erosion in the limestone rock over approximately 65 million years. A natural gorge with a depth exceeding 100 meters and a width of 70 meters, with walls rising up to 300 meters and narrowing at some points to less than 10 meters, is a masterpiece of nature that leaves no visitor indifferent. Located in Ronda, the gorge is not only a testament to the power of nature but also a habitat for a diverse fauna and flora, including birds of prey, mountain goats, and diverse Mediterranean vegetation.

The Caminito del Tajo is a modern walkway that has been restored and renovated to allow visitors to safely explore the impressive gorge. This trail, which follows the path of the old road used for the construction and maintenance of hydroelectric dams, offers an exciting and safe experience for hikers or as an exciting family activity. Although it has a considerable slope that is noticeable when climbing, it is feasible for most people.

The first section starts from El Campillo Square, which, up to the entrance of the hillside path at the so-called Casa de Manolillo, is perfectly rehabilitated. From here, it runs along the left side of the Tajo Gorge (in the direction of the Guadalevín River), following a trail that was constructed—since it already appears on the plans from that time—for the storage of materials and worker access for the construction of the Puente Nuevo in the 18th century, where it ends. This entire hanging path, attached to and above the rock, offers spectacular views of the Hoya del Tajo and the Puente Nuevo as we get closer to it, as well as the pools and waterfalls of the Guadalevín and its rugged course. The second section of the project is currently being planned with the goal of extending the route to the San Miguel hermitage, so that visitors can gain a deeper understanding of the rich cultural heritage and natural beauty of this city.
